Room 20 Classroom Notes May 27-30

Good Week!
We have been working on designing math board games and we will be playing them this week. The kids had a blast creating them and I can't wait to play. In writing, we continue our literary analysis of the book,"Passage to Freedom." Students have identified specific examples of conflicts in the book based on conflicts with self, conflicts with others, or conflicts with society. This is a great example of literature studies that take place in middle school. In reading, we continue reading the story, "Woodsrunner," by Gary Paulson, about a boy joining the army in the year 1776. This is a terrific period piece that gives kids a great perspective from a thirteen-year old's point of view. Speaking of history, we continue studying Colonial America and its geography. This study will ultimately evolve to learning about the reasons for the revolution. Nuts and bolts: We will need chaperones for a walking field trip to Reed College next week (first week of July). I originally wanted Thursday the 5th, but that is Field Day, so I am shooting for Friday the 6th am. Please let me know if that is possible for any of you. I have not heard back from Gregory yet (Sunday eve), but will let you know ASAP. Also, for the last week school, I'm hoping to visit Johnson Creek and compare our data we gathered at the beginning of the year. I want to do the field study on Monday the 9th or Tuesday the 10th. I am waiting on Noah's availability, but if he is not available, we will be going anyway for a journalling/observation morning. End of the year will Friday the 13th and we still need folks to help out/set up/take down. We need a grill for the lunch and someone to grill. Students are not inviting family members to the lunch but will be inviting families to the fifth grade promotion in the afternoon of the 13th. Let me know if you have any questions.
