Room 20 Weekly Notes June 9-13

Good week to you!We leave in the morning on Tuesday to do a field study at Johnson Creek. This is of such vital importance because the creek tells us how healthy our environment is at the moment and weather it is suitable for salmon and other animals. We will test water quality, PH, turbidity (clarity), temperature, and dissolved oxygen. We will also take samples of the water with nets to identify what kind of macro-invertebrates live in our creek. If such creatures as Mayfly larvae live there, that's a good thing (although they look weird!). We will also pull invasive plant species such as Wild Geranium, or "Stinky Bob." Finally, we will do a journaling rotation where we will draw and reflect on what we sense. Since we did this exact study earlier in the year, we will compare our data with the fall data. We will be sharing our video game designs with our Reading Buddies. We will also be receiving all of our work samples in our files from Kindergarten to fifth grade before Friday. I have been sending quizzes and samples home this year but will be sending home writing, science, math, and speaking graded samples that will appear on a cover sheet. I will also be asking kids to take home any extra clothing that has been left in the classroom. As a final history project, the entire fifth grade will be hanging little posters of historical events in the hall along a very long timeline. Finally, come one, come all: We will have our Fifth Grade Promotion Ceremony at 1:45 on Friday for families. On Friday, students (students only- no family) will have lunch in the garden at 12:00. Please sign up if you would like to help. Sign-up outside room 20's door. I enjoyed having your lovely children this year and I truly wish you all the best as we transition from elementary to middle school. Please let me know how I can help. Email me over the summer if you have any questions or would like me to advocate for your child! Have a peaceful summer!

Room 20 Classroom Notes June 2-6

Are we there yet? :) We have a week of review and finishing projects. We also have Field Day and a walking field trip. In reading, we will continue our study of the book, "Woodsrunner," a story of a thirteen year old boy in 1776. In writing, we finish and publish our literary analysis of, "A Passage to Freedom," the story of Sugihara. Please ask your child about him and the various conflicts that surrounded him during his tenure as a diplomat for Japan in Lithuania during the Second World War. He had to make a big decision as to whether he would help Jewish refugees fleeing the Nazis or do his government's bidding and not create visas for the refugees. In math, we finish our math board game unit by playing each other's games. We will also review multiplying and dividing fractions. In Social Studies, we continue our exploration of early America. Thursday is our Field Day, which is always a fun time. We will be visited by Gregory from Reed College on Monday and explore a calligraphy exhibition on Friday. If you would still like to chaperone, I need you!! Thanks to all who have stepped up and requested supporting our class for Reed, Johnson Creek on Monday the 9th, or Promotion on the 13th at 1:45. And yes, we still need volunteers! Let me know if you are available.
