Room 20 Classroom Notes January 28-31

Good Week to you! Homework Club will be cancelled this week again and the 5th of February. I have been taking a workshop to boost my education as a teacher. I know that the hard copy of weekly notes comes out on Wednesday, but since I send you all an email of this every Sunday, I hope you get this information sooner. Speaking of which, if you still are not getting my emails let me know. I spoke to the Northwest Outdoor Science School secretary and we should be receiving student packets soon. The cost for non-full or partial scholarship students will be $155.00. This will be offset by any fundraising we do this year or any donations we receive. We will be doing art this week: once with Tom, Nora's dad, where we will talk architecture and on Thursday and Friday with a fifth grade parent who will be showing us how to draw tall ships from The Age of Exploration. In math, we continue with larger multiplication and division- still need those egg cartons for our fractions section rapidly approaching. everyone in the class is reading a novel in reading groups. They meet with me at least twice a week. We are also reading nonfiction and organizing our notes using a FQR- facts, questions, response using newsela.com articles. In Social Studies, we continue with our explorers reading and writing. Our final drafts of our biographies of explorers will be due this Friday, January 31st, so students must be working hard. We have done the research and now we put the information into our essays. The essays from last week were truly awesome! The students came up with wonderful family stories. This week's essay is based on whether we believe the explorers were heroes or villains and why. What do you think?

Room 20 Classroom Notes January 21-24

Good week to you! The students and I had the opportunity to discuss and write about Dr. Martin Luther King. We specifically discussed how nonviolent protesting was really the determining factor in the Civil Rights Movement's success. In science, we worked on our Variables unit by changing the variables when working with pendulums. We discovered the only significant variable was changing the length. The results did not change much when we altered mass and position. In math, we took our Unit 3 Test and will begin Unit 4, which covers large multiplication, division, and fractions. We need egg cartons! They are for the math unit in early February. We need a class set of 12 (2x6) cartons and a few 18 (3x6). In writing, we continue our explorers biographies. We will also begin plotting the explorers' routes on google maps. In Social Studies, we will continue learning about European explorers and talk about the consequences for the peoples they encountered. Essays of the week have been awesome! Our bravery essay was especially interesting to read. Our kids have so many different and enriching experiences. This week, please write about the following. Minimum of 250 words: Go and visit/call your eldest relation. Have them tell you a true story their grandparents told them. This story should give you a glimpse into the past from about 100 ago. Remember to cover who, what, when, where, how, why.

Weekly Essay Due Friday, January 17th

Think about a time when you were brave. Perhaps you had to speak in front of the class, do
something that was difficult, or ride a fast roller coaster. Write about what happened. Be specific
and include details. Minimum words: 250.

Room 20 Classroom Notes January 13-17

Good Week!
This week, we will be comparing the average temperatures with our sister city, Sapporo, Japan and Portland and graph our findings. We will also continue with our explorers essay. We were assigned explorers and will be researching and writing up our findings. I also want to stress how important citing sources is while we amass all of our new information. In Math, we will have our unit 3 test on Friday, which will cover most of the geometry we have been working on. In reading, we will work with vocabulary and read a story as a class titled, "The Dinosaurs of Waterhouse Hawkins," and then move into reading groups for the remaining three days of the week. In Social Studies, students are synthesizing what they are reading in our textbook by writing response paragraphs based on the information. This will ultimately turn into a sizable essay after several reading sessions. Remember, if you did not receive math or spelling, you can always do it online via spelling city or IXL. Just send me an email and I can tell you what your child needs to work on. Math homework will be due next day, while our weekly essay and spelling will be due Friday. I hope you have a great week!

Room 20 Classroom Notes January 6-10

Happy New Year! We have much to do! We will finish up a few projects from 2013 this week and hit the ground running learning about explorers in Social Studies, Variables in Science (and doing several experiments), and starting an informational essay after we complete our imaginative pieces. In math, we finish learning about volume within the next two weeks and, after which, will have our Unit 3 test. For the informational essay, it will be about a specific explorer during the age of exploration. This was a very complex time in history and it is my intention to tell the whole story, both positive and negative. While some of the explorers helped their countries gain more power, it was often on the backs of native peoples or African slaves. It should be a fascinating look at history. Students will also be asked to cite sources for a detailed and accurate bibliography. Something new: We will begin returning some of our homework the next day. Weekly essays and spelling will always be due on the last day of the week. I would like to see math homework done and returned the next day. Please make sure your child knows YOU know. This is an expectation in middle school and I want to move toward that model for our daily homework. Thanks for your support.
