Room 20 Classroom Notes February 24-28

Good week to you. Yes, I shaved my beard! My wife said, "Thank goodness. Matt, you were looking like the old man from the sea." We sent information out regarding cost of camp last Friday. Any questions, please contact me. This week, we begin reading a graphic novel at home and will be presenting them the week before spring break March 17-21. Students will be submitting a digital newspaper like they previously did for their imaginative digital newspapers, but will be given various choices on how they present them. Stay tuned. Now, students are selecting a title and reading. Please ask them what the plot of the story is so far, the setting, the problem/solution, the character traits. The next book report will be on informative books. In math, we continue with fractions. We will be using our egg cartons to find equivalent fractions and begin adding and subtracting fractions of different denominators. In science, aside from working with our fabulous Reed Science friends, we will do an experiment designing and engineering vehicles of flight using straws, rubber bands, rotors, and fish line. This will be part of our variables exploration. In reading, we will work primarily in our book groups and work on informational articles on newsela.com. In writing, we continue the final stages of our persuasive writing pieces. We will be starting Portland Taiko the week of March 3rd. We will also have gardening on Wednesday. On Thursday, we will be visited by Alea again to finish up a tremendous sensory art project that was fascinating to be a part of! Such a plethora of partnerships here at good ole Lewis.
