Room 20 Classroom Notes April 29-May 3

Reed WAS AWESOME! Flaming gummy bears? Check chemical changes. Seeing an otter? Check foodweb discussion. Tour nuclear reactor? Check atomic properties. Zebrafish zygote and adult study? Check biological change over time. Make a new friend Zach who is our go-to contact at Reed Canyon? Check future partnership for future classrooms studying land and water. This week will be exciting! Docent letters for Art Night went home on Friday. Please consider even if you are a band member. This week is major math test prep for our test on THURSDAY morning (on time/sleep/eat well). We will be reviewing and practicing math concepts from this year. In writing, we are revising poems about our earlier common thread unit. Students will go back to their poems and make better word choices using some online tools. We also continue with a literary analysis based on the story, “A Passage to Freedom.” We identified three types of conflict in the story: between the character and other people, conflicts in society, and the internal conflict happening inside the main character. Students selected one conflict they want to write about. Essays will be due Friday, May 10th. Our Book Reports are due May 7th. This is approximately one week. Part of homework this week is filling out a reading log online (google form) at home or at school. Students may be reading large chunks of text if they are behind. They will be turning in their book reports (digital or hard copy) on that Friday and we will begin presenting. Also in math, students worked on a vocabulary word or concept (example: volume) and wrote a simple lesson plan. They wrote the concept, defined it, wrote an objective (The students will learn how to calculate volume), wrote out two straightforward questions and two word problems in context. That, along with a Common Core Standards support website, are part of our test prep along with a state-created math practice test.

Room 20 Classroom Notes April 22-26

This week, we visit Reed College on a full-day science extravaganza (Wednesday)! We will have several awesome chaperones (many thanks!) who will accompany us to laboratories, nuclear reactor, the college lunchroom, and the natural area around Reed Lake to compare our Johnson Creek, coastal, and now Crystal Springs field studies. We will have a guide who will give us a tour, help us pull invasive species, and plant native species. We might even find evidence of a beaver! This week, we also take our reading state test. We will finish up a practice test this week and go over the nuances of the type of questions and kinds of strategies to tackle the questions. In math, we work converting fractions to decimals and decimals to fractions. We soon enter percentages. Please talk to your child about when you need to read percentages. Students are working on a book report with a friend in class or independently. They have selected a book, are presently reading it, and will present the summary and recommendation in a way they deem best: brochure, essay, poster, digital presentation, or other. Art Night is rapidly approaching. Our works will include both realistic and abstract pieces. We will have some online homework this week, but will have paper copies for anyone who needs it because of lack of access or preference (if they prefer hard copy).

Classroom Notes April 15-19

How was camp? One word: exceptional! The staff was awesome, the educational component was tremendous, the counselors were professional, and our kids were very respectful. We only got bitten by the rain once, and it was on our last day. This week, we begin our science state test. Those two one-hour sessions should suffice. If students need additional time, that will be no problem. The science test is just as much a reading test, if anything. Students must take their time and weigh each option. Finally, students know that the tests are written to throw you a curveball! Some might sound mostly correct, yet may not be. Be sure to read through all choices. I will give students time to take a break- go for a walk or stretch. They really do expend much energy during these times of intense concentration. My mantra is, "Do your best." We visit Reed College on Friday, April 19th and Wednesday, April 24th. We will be Reedies for sure! Friday is time spent in the Cooley Art Gallery, where Gregory (who will visit us on Tuesday for a front-loading session) will guide us through authentic Civil War drawings. No IPhones, cameras, cellphones, or audio devices during this period of history for the journalists. The action was painstakingly drawn out: battles, soldiers, places. On Wednesday, we visit the science aspect of Reed. We will visit laboratories and a nuclear reactor (that's right!). This week, we will study forms of energy, so it perfectly fits in. Most of the week will be reviewing science concepts and math review. We will also start a literary analysis, which will be the last big writing project of the year. After the literary analysis, students will begin their 2012-2013 digital portfolio, which will be a gathering of writing, but will also include other subjects. It will be a reflective piece and a timeline of what they explored this year. Reading testing will begin late April. An additional word on testing: Please make sure everyone is well rested and eating well this week. Fruit, yogurt, cereal/oatmeal, and low sugar juices are always a good start to the day. I know I'll be doing the same! I REALLY NEED CHAPERONES FOR FRIDAY AND WEDNESDAY. PLEASE DO NOT BE POLITE AND MAKE WAY FOR OTHERS. These trips will be really fun, educational, and perhaps the last time your child will be caught with you in public with their peers before Middle School. :)

Room 20 Classroom Notes April 8-13

Hi All, We are all very excited about camp this week! We will certainly have much to share after we get home Wednesday afternoon. Thanks to everyone for helping prepare your child for this great adventure! I wanted to let you know that state testing will begin the week we get back along with two walking field trips to Reed College. Science testing begins on the 16th of April. This test usually takes one to two sessions. Reading will take place the following week on Thursday the 25th of April. My stance on testing is that it is one test on a given day. It is one assessment out of many the students take. Relax. Get some rest the night before. Eat a good breakfast. Do your personal best. Calling all chaperones!!! We will be taking a walking field trip to Reed College's Cooley Art Gallery to witness a very interesting collection of drawings from the Civil War. Our wonderful friend Gregory will guide us, per usual. We will go back to Reed on the 24th (the next week) to go on a science tour viewing and interacting with many science-based activities and topics. I really do not want to give too much away. Both of these experiences need at least four chaperones each. Can you please come? Let me know ASAP.

Camp Preparation

Hi All!
Please be sure to be in school by 8:00 on Monday! Please make sure you have labeled all bags, including your waterproof bag (simple plastic bag will do) for sleeping bag. You may bring books and notebooks, but NO electronic devices. I'm so excited!!!'
