Happy 2013-2014 New School Year!

Tuesday, August 20, 2013

Dear Room 20,

As I continue to dust off my materials and configure new classroom arrangements, I wanted to share a poem I created speaking a bit about myself. This structure will be similar to one of our first writing assignments. It is called "I Am From..."

I Am From...

I am from Ukraine, Ireland, and Poland,
I am from the kindness of strangers,
I am from Jean and John,
I am from Michigan, blue lakes and thunder-clouded spring evenings,
I am from hugs and side-splitting laughter,
I am from asking questions,
I am from reading a good book,
I am from using The Force for good,
I am from loving my kittens,
I am from a Timbers match on a hot August night,
I am from an aqua-blue morning before anyone is awake,
I am from traveling and taking chances,
I am from being scared and leaving the night-light on,
I am from running a fifty-mile race in the Mount Hood wilderness,
I am from crying because my sister died,
I am from crying because my boys were born,
I am from looking into the eyes of my dear wife,
I am from making a difference because I am a teacher.

I look forward to working and learning with all of my students and their families this year!

Sincerely,
Mr. Marchyok

Garden Lunch on Friday for Students ONLY!

I spoke to many of you saying the lunch was for families. Yes, I'm the newbie and got it wrong- again!

So... The lunch is at 12:00, but only for kids.

1:45 is the ceremony and FOR FAMILIES.

Many thanks for your flexibility!

Room 20 Weekly Notes June 10-14

I want to thank you all for the privilege of being your child's teacher. We have discovered much this year! We have gone on journeys starting in the stars and ending in a cell. We have discovered inventors and learned why we declared independence from England. This week, all Woodsrunner information will be turned in on Tuesday. We will also have a quiz on invertebrates. In math, we work with percentages based on sales and products. We end FLASH on Wednesday. We will finish up our poetry book and have a poetry reading on Wednesday and, if needed, Thursday morning. Thursday afternoon will be spent with our buddy classroom- Ms. Logue. We need help to pass out watermelon on Thursday from 1:30-2:00. I know many of you are volunteering for Friday's 5th Grade Promotion, but we could sure use a couple volunteers for Thursday afternoon. 12:00 is lunch ONLY FOR STUDENTS. 1:45 is the Promotion celebration FOR FAMILIES. I hope EVERYONE can come! For homework this week, all activities will be catch-up. This is primarily writing, but may include science vertebrates/invertebrates and MATH FACTS. All writing assignments must be in by Thursday. Most of our class will have homework at least on Monday and Tuesday nights, depending on what your child needs to finish.

Equivalent Fractions and Decimals

Today we used a meter stick to be our number line and worked in small groups to place decimals and fractions of different and equivalent value.
